4 Magical Things to Do on the Bruce Peninsula in Early Spring (Including a Hidden Woodland Gem)

Welcome to our  blog!  Tina and Graham have been here on the Bruce Peninsula since 1996! This is our 30th anniversary of being on this incredible landscape.  Having explored so much of what this area has to offer we thought we’d share some insider info. Spring is a fantastic time to explore the area.  If you’ve only ever visited the Bruce Peninsula in the peak of summer you may be missing the most enchanting season.

Early spring on the Peninsula — especially May and early June — is when the forests begin to come alive.  The air is rich with migrating birdsong, the spring blooms and wild orchids return colour to a land which was shrouded in snow and gray for months,  and the summer crowds have not yet arrived. It is truly  a time of renewal, rebirth and regeneration. Time to get reacquainted with nature and treat your senses to  birdsong, and long reflective walks along limestone cliffs with vistas of unbelievable turquoise waters, and breath in the forest air of the many cedar-lined paths and trails which criss cross this area

If you’ve never been here in May or June, why not treat yourself to a springtime escape near Lion's Head or Tobermory.  Here are four magical experiences we think you should include on your list.

Georgian Bay Shoreline, Bruce Peninsula National Park

1. Hike the Cliffs Before Peak Season

Spring is one of the best times to experience the incredible sections of the Bruce Trail that wend their way along the edge of the Niagara Escarpment on the Georgian Bay Coast of the peninsula.  The days are a bit cooler than the peak of summer so it is ideal for hiking.  The trails are not as busy so you will likely find some real moments of solitude in nature with sweeping vistas of Georgian Bay entirely to yourself.  It is also a great time to trek the trails in  the Bruce Peninsula National Park. Parking and reservations are much easier to acquire, and again there are fewer crowds. Both Cyprus Lake and its famous Grotto as well as Halfway Log Dump (our personal favourite) are must sees!

Other trails we recommend:

  • The Lion’s Head Lookout

  • Devil’s Monument (with a waterfall and an inland flowerpot rock formation)

  • Little Cove

  • Barrow Bay lookout (with a staircase that lets you descend the cliff face)

2. Visit Tobermory Before the Summer Rush

Among the premier destinations for visitors to the Peninsula is the charming harbour village of Tobermory.  After its long quiet winter season, this quaint port comes alive and readies itself for the onslaught of summer visitors. A visit here in spring is a must. The cafes, restaurants, ice cream parlours, and gift shops open their doors again. The glass bottom tour boats begin their schedule of tours to Flowerpot Island and visits to shallow water shipwrecks. The dive shops welcome scuba divers to begin exploring Fathom Five National Marine Park. Tobermory also hosts Parks Canada’s visitor centre. The centre has a  theatre, an interpretive museum and an observation tower. From here you can embark on a scenic hike to the Georgian Bay coast.

The best part of Tobermory in the spring is that the townsfolk and tourism staff are  not as exhausted and burnt out as they can be in the fall. They will be thrilled to welcome you and see some fresh faces after a long, sometimes isolated winter.

Spring Wildflowers, Cathedral Grove on the Bruce Trail, Bruce Peninsula

3. Discover the Wildflowers at Cathedral Grove

While this is also a section of the Bruce Trail with great lookouts of Georgian Bay and could have easily  been included in the “Hike The Cliffs” section, we feel Cathedral Grove deserves a special mention for a springtime escape.  This is, in our opinion, one of the best places to view and photograph the incredible spring wildflowers the Bruce Peninsula has to offer.  The forest floor is carpeted with red and white Trilliums. You’ll also be sure to see  Fringed Polygala, Hepatica, Yellow Ladyslipper Orchids, Virginia Spring Beauty, Blue Cohosh, Yellow Trout Lily and so many more

This is one of the lesser-known woodland spaces where you can slow down and reconnect with the land itself.  This happens to be the location where Graham led the Soul Stroll forest bathing Eco-Adventure when he worked for the Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association.

 4. RavenStar Magic - Discover a Woodland Rune & Sculpture Trail and Garden Cafe Near Lion’s Head

Some self promotion never hurts eh?  Tucked quietly near Lion’s Head, RavenStar offers an experience like no other on the Bruce Peninsula.  We bill ourselves as a Sculpture Journey and Garden Cafe attraction. This year we open starting May 8, 2026.

Our signature forest trail journey features a seasonal rune message hidden along the path — a nine-letter word you slowly uncover as you walk. Along the way, you’ll find handcrafted faerie doors with a tree magic tale inside each, natural sculptures, and spaces designed for reflection such as Nematona’s Labyrinth and Morrigan’s Dome.  There’s places to make your own sculptures, create forest music, meditate, draw oracle cards, drum, and so much more!

We think coming early in the season is one of the most beautiful times to visit. The air is fresh, the trail is peaceful, and the energy of renewal is tangible. We have thousands of spring bulbs to enjoy and our herb, vegetable and witches gardens are coming alive and verdant.  Our friend Caeli houses her honey bees here so you’ll see the spring blossoms abuzz with life. Want a deeper experience?  Caeli hosts bee tours and gives you a behind the scenes look at the secret life of bees. Get in touch to see how you can book a tour.

Many guests tell us spring is their favourite month — before the heat and height of summer.

On the way to Tobermory and feeling hungry or need a beverage? Our Garden Cafe is open 10-4 from Fridays through Mondays and features exceptional vegetarian and vegan fare, seasonal soups, delectable savouries and a range of incredible European style desserts. We pride ourselves on using a lot of organic, local and home grown ingredients. Bide a while in our scenic outdoor seating area surrounded by the sights, sounds, and smells of nature.  Need something to go? We offer herbal teas picked fresh out of our gardens, brewed to order organic fair trade coffee, specialty drinks and a range of items going back to our Harvest Moon bakery days.
